From Listed heritage buildings to new builds; Selectaglaze secondary glazing can be installed to enhance environments, making them warmer, quieter and safer.
Founded in 1966 and Royal Warrant Holder since 2004, Selectaglaze is the leading specialist in the design, manufacture and installation of secondary glazing. It is a fully independent window, fitted on the room-side of the existing windows, to form a double window or ‘double glazing’. Secondary glazing offers a number of benefits which include; thermal enhancements by reducing heat loss and stopping draughts, one of the most effective methods of eradicating noise ingress and egress, as well as some products offering added security against physical attack, bomb blast and firearms. Its discreet, sympathetic, reversible and neat unobtrusive design makes it the ideal solution to preserve and retain the character of older more traditional buildings and satisfies the requirements of all the UK heritage and conservation bodies for use in Listed buildings.

To focus attention on sustainability and well-being, there is a growing need to improve EPC ratings and conform to MEES, to ensure buildings meet acceptable standards for letting and enhancing market value. Specially designed frames, with high performance seals to stop air leakage and draughts, and thermally efficient glass, can reduce heat loss by half. Secondary glazing can achieve u-Values of between 1.9 – 1. This helps to create a more comfortable living and working environment.

Selectaglaze secondary glazing can also provide an exceptional level of sound/acoustic insulation, making homes and work places quieter and more relaxing. The separation between the primary and secondary glazing decouples the panes, markedly reducing sound transmission. If the secondary glazing is set 150mm from the primary window, a sound reduction of 45dB can be achieved, compared to about 34dB for double glazing. As 10dB equates to a doubling of the sound level this represents a significant improvement.
Subtle secondary glazing, with locks and strengthened glass, offers a secondary barrier to entry, deterring opportunistic thieves. In turn this improved level of security will provide peace of mind and security to those occupying the building. Secondary glazing with certified levels of protection against determined intruders, bomb blast or even a ballistic attack is available.

The Arch is a boutique Hotel situated in Marble Arch, London. The hotel cleverly blends Georgian architecture and inspired contemporary touches. Selectaglaze had previously installed 40 secondary glazing units to rooms overlooking Great Cumberland Place utilising a combination of its Series 20 and Series 90 vertical sliders. The latest installation included Series 60 tilt-in vertical sliders fitted in rooms on the third and basement floors. This bespoke unit has tilt-in panels which is beneficial when windows have unequal pane sizes. On the fifth floor, rooms were treated with the Series 10 2 pane horizontal sliding unit; a slim and versatile system that provides easy access for cleaning, as well as for ventilation.

Ham Yard Hotel, London was redeveloped by Firmdale Hotels where 91 individually designed hotel bedrooms and 24 apartments were created, along with a 1950s style bowling alley, theatre and restaurant. Although new double glazed windows were installed, the corner of the hotel on Great Windmill Street still suffered high exterior noise levels. The introduction of secondary glazing effectively and discreetly combated the outside sound. 37 openings were treated by Selectaglaze in three different unit styles. The secondary glazing was finished in a dark grey colour to match the existing primary windows, making them as unobtrusive as possible.

The Grade II Listed Blue Anchor Pub in St Albans, Hertfordshire has been converted into a two-storey four bedroomed home. The restoration was a success; however, solutions were required for the thermally cold and inefficient single glazed primary windows throughout, as well as noise insulation from the busy thoroughfare out the front of the property. 16 openings were treated with adaptable and discreet framing systems from across the range.

5-6 Connaught Place, Grade II Listed, was converted from offices into luxurious apartments, which had large original Georgian windows that allowed the noise from the busy London streets to flood the properties. A total of 69 units were installed in five different unit styles all using toughened safety glass, curved units were also installed to mirror the styles of the primary windows. The opulent interiors are stunning and now have discreet secondary glazing bring them up to 21st century standards.
